At 5 yrs old the Horse has a full compliment of cheek teeth... 6 above and 6 below. The roots are barely noticeable.

M1 - M3.  Permanent Molar Teeth

C. Canine Tooth

i - 1 to i - 3  Permanent Incisor Teeth

At 10 yrs. old , eruption has been continuing to compensate for wear and the teeth now exhibit distinct roots and occupy less of the jaws , especially the cavity of the maxillary sinus. The roots of the teeth close up at approximately 12 years of age.

At 18 yrs. old ,  the teeth have very little crown left embedded in the jaws  and the closed roots are long and prominent. Very little of the maxillary sinus is occupied by the cheek teeth , the upper level of the roots being somewhat below the facial crest.
